Police in Townsville have launched a homicide investigation after discovering the body of a 47-year-old woman during a welfare check on Monday.

In a statement, police said they were called to a unit on Chandler Street in Garbutt – a suburb of Townsville close to the city’s airport and RAAF base – at about 1.45pm on Monday.

“Upon arrival, police located the woman deceased,” the Queensland Police Service said in a statement.

“A crime scene was declared and investigations into the circumstances of the death are under way.

“Anyone who may have information is urged to contact police.”

Police said they had initially been called to the unit to conduct a welfare check.
