Two teenage suspects have been located in Central Victoria, a day after the stabbing death of a woman in Melbourne's inner-north.

Emergency services were called to reports a woman had been seriously injured at a Stafford Street home in Abbotsford shortly after 11pm on Wednesday.

Detectives say they were told two males fled in a car before emergency crews arrived, and the 41-year-old woman later died in hospital.

The two male suspects aged 14 and 15 were later located in Learmonth in Central Victoria by local police officers, and have been taken into custody to be questioned by homicide investigators.

Police say they do not know how the teenagers were able to make the more than 130-kilometre journey to Learmonth from Melbourne.

However, Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said he did not believe the pair were hiding.

"We're trying piece together what has occurred and to try and understand the reason and the motivation behind it," he said.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the woman's death.

Police seek information about victim's vehicle

Detective Inspector Thomas said police were still attempting to construct a timeline of events, with the two teens unaccounted-for for during the early hours of this morning.

Police say they believe the pair drove away from the Abbotsford home in the victim's car, a white 2020 model Toyota RAV4 with the registration BMF 464, which was damaged on its rear and bonnet.

The vehicle was seen at around 11.20pm near roadworks at the St Kilda Junction area, and was later found at Havelock Street in St Kilda at 7.30am this morning, according to police.

"We believe that vehicle may have travelled around the St Kilda/Elwood area for quite some time," Detective Inspector Thomas said.

Detective Inspector Thomas said some items found on Fitzroy Street in St Kilda may form part of the police investigation.

Police are trying to ascertain the movements of the vehicle during the night and are appealing for the anyone with information to come forward.

They say the 13-year-old son of the woman was in the premises at the time of the alleged attack, but was not physically injured.

Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
