London’s pizza staple Homeslice has launched an entirely plant-based menu at their Old Street restaurant in Shoreditch.
The revamped vegan-only menu of six pizzas, drinks, sauces and desserts is available at the flagship from June 13.
Existing popular vegan options include the ‘nduja and tenderstem broccoli’, ‘chilli and garlic oil’ and the ‘mushroom, ricotta, pumpkin seeds, chilli and soy truffle glaze’. Demands for these plant-based options have risen by 25 per cent since their launch in 2019.
Homeslice’s creative director Mark Wogan told the Standard of his decision to “go plant-based but without a compromise”.
He said: “For us it was about the quality of the product Symplicity were offering. There’s no e-number, no hydrogenated soy – no air miles on the ingredient to get it into the product.
“The movement towards a more ‘flexitarian’ approach to eating is really important however what is even more important is to make sure that the alternative protein that you’re using is actually good for the environment.
“If food is to be sustainable going forward we have to, as a society, explore as many different avenues as possible before we settle on what is the right way forward.
“There are a lot of options out there on the market now and I’m not convinced they’re all good – either for you for the environment. But we will always carefully select what we do and I think that’s why people have come. They’ve tried our vegan options, they’ve enjoyed them and so they come back.”
Symplicity focuses on providing meat alternatives with full transparency in its fermented and pickled vegetable bases.
Of the six Homeslice locations across London, the Shoreditch spot was chosen to home the menu, imagined by head chef Niel Rankin – partner to Homeslice founders Mark and Alan Wogan in Symplicity.
