Homes Under the Hammer's Martin Roberts offers update on 'mercy dash' as he admits nerves as he nears Ukraine border

Martin Roberts has given an update on his 'mercy dash' to Ukraine.

The Homes Under the Hammer star appeared on Good Morning Britain on Monday to speak to Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid as he neared the Ukraine border in Poland.

Martin set out on his 26-hour drive on Saturday night and shared a video on social media as he stopped at a service station after taking ferry from Dover to Calais and onwards through France, Belgium and The Netherlands as he headed for Germany.

The TV star, from Warrington, arrived in Krakow this morning (Monday) and an exhausted Martin gave an update on GMB, telling viewers: "I set off from Bournemouth where the organisation I'm helping have their base and I went cross to the ferry travelled through France, Netherlands, Belgium, down thought Germany then all the way through Poland and I'm now in Krakow.

"I'm heading today to Medyka, the border with Ukraine which is 20km from where the shelling happened yesterday..."

He then shared his nerves, adding: "So I'm filled with a great sense of purpose but also a little bit of trepidation," to which Richard said: "I bet you are."

Martin has taken on the lengthy journey in his van full of supplies (ITV)

Martin stood speaking to Susanna and Richard via video link from Krakow in front of his red van which, he said, was full of everything from medicine for children, to respirators for newborn babies, saline drips, and pet food.

His trip comes after he posted a tearful video from outside Costco after being limited to the number of bottles of children's medicine he could by before other members of the public stepped in.

After being asked about the video, Martin said: "I woke up on that Saturday morning, like a lot of people, and thought, "What can I do?" Donating just didn't seem to be enough.

"I just went to Costco and tried to buy stuff. I was so touched, I was in the line and people saw me trying to buy this stuff and [when he was refused] they said 'We'll buy it for you'.

"I understand why you can't buy lots of Calpol, but I was touched that if you give people the opportunity to help they will do it."

During his message on Saturday, Martin asked fans for song choices to get him through the long drive. He said that as well as lots of music on the stereo, he was fuelled on the journey by 'lots of wine gums' and 'bits of Red Bull.'

The 58-year-old also said he feels a 'massive responsibility' to safely deliver the supplies.
