Homes evacuated after seven fire crews attend blaze in North East

PEOPLE have been evacuated from their homes as a precaution after a building caught fire near Aberdeen FC’s Pittodrie Stadium.

A total of seven appliances were sent to deal with a garage building on fire at Merkland Road East which was first reported to emergency services at around 8am on Wednesday.

It is understood dozens of people were moved to a nearby rest centre as fire crews attempted to put out the blaze.

More than 60 people who were evacuated from their homes attended the rest centre at Aberdeen Sports Village, the BBC reported.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 8.02am on Wednesday January 22 to reports of a building fire at Merkland Road East, Aberdeen.

“Operations control initially mobilised two appliances to the scene and firefighters called for a further five appliances to support them.

“Firefighters remain on scene working hard to extinguish a fire affecting a car garage. There are no reports of any casualties.

“Police Scotland are evacuating nearby properties.”
