Homeowners discover unconventional window hack that keeps you cool during heatwave

As the temperature rises outside, the stuffiness and heat of a home also increases tenfold..

People across Scotland and the rest of the UK are typically not used to such high temperatures, as this month's heatwave reaches highs of 30C in areas of the country.

The Mirror reports that Brits can get creative when it comes to trying to keep cool, from camping in front of an electric fan to more unusual ones like licking their arms - it reportedly works!

With no air conditioning built into UK homes, it can be difficult to keep the temperatures down across the nation - but there's one simple trick many are missing out on.

It turns out that homeowners who own sash windows could be missing out on keeping their property comfortable and cool.

It is apparent that opening the window and letting the breeze in can cool the home down - but the windows have another use in keeping the place nice and cold.

Social media users have been left shocked after learning traditional sash windows can create "Victorian air conditioning" - when you open both the top and bottom windows.

This simple hack came from Twitter user Jess McCabe, @jester, as she wrote: "Annual hot weather reminder that if you've got sash windows and open them equally at top and bottom you can enjoy some Victorian 'air conditioning' that ventilates and removes heat."

The helpful tweet was accompanied with a link to a Cambridge University blog post that confirmed what she had typed on social media was true.

Twitter users flocked to the comments of Jess' post to share their surprise at the simple hack, as one wrote: "Lived with these for years and suffered every summer until we found this out."

Another person replied: "Thank you for sharing this! I had no idea."

A third wrote: "Oh no why am I only learning this now as I just moved into a house without sash windows."

And another added: "We've had sash windows for 2 decades and did not know this. very cool (as it were) thing to learn!"

However, others were quick to point out that opening the windows might not always be the best solution in keeping the home cool.

One responder advised: "If it's hotter outside - close the windows or the the house will get even hotter. Use a fan to get a nice breeze then open the windows at night to cool the place down."

Another helpful commenter replied: "For those without Victorian windows, if you open two windows and point a fan towards one at a certain distance.

"You can trigger Bernouilli's principle and generate quite the breeze, for quick ventilation."
