Sometimes only a full English breakfast can sort you out for the day ahead, and as it was a rainy Monday morning, I couldn’t resist taking a trip to my local café to devour one.
Peppers Coffee in Willaston, Wirral, has a great selection of breakfasts that are available until 12pm. Despite me living in the village, it was my first time visiting the café, which has homely décor and an outdoor seating area around the back.
As it was the week of the Platinum Jubilee when I visited, Peppers was decorated with Union flags and the latte (£2.90) I ordered came with a crown shaped shortbread which was a lovely touch. I arrived shortly after opening time (9am) where there was a couple already there waiting for their breakfast.

I had my heart set on the full English breakfast, but I still perused the menu and was tempted by a few things, including the sausage and egg bap (£4.75). However, I listened to my rumbling stomach and opted for the regular full English breakfast which cost £9 and included a sausage, two bacon, a fried egg, black pudding, tomato, beans, mushrooms and a slice of toast (you can choose white or brown bread).
You place your order at the counter and pay there and then, which I liked, as it means you don’t have to wait around for the bill afterwards. The breakfast, which is also available in a large size (£10.50), was cooked to order and I enjoyed being able to watch the very friendly lady cooking the food behind the counter. The smells coming from the kitchen area were incredible.
As it was cooked to order, I waited around 15 minutes for my breakfast, and it was certainly worth it. I liked the appearance of the plate and appreciated how the beans had been put in a little bowl so that the juice didn’t seep into the other components.
Every element of the full English tasted fresh and was piping hot, which isn’t always the case with fry ups due to everything being ready at different times. I thoroughly enjoyed everything on the plate, which was unexpected, as I’m not really a fan of black pudding, but Peppers’ was delicious!
My only critique would be that I like my bacon a little crispier, but this is my personal preference. The slice of thick white toast was soft and lathered in butter - it made for the perfect bacon butty.
The stand out part for me, though, was the sausage. It was full of flavour and slightly crispy on the outside which I love. I heard the couple next to me mention the sausage, too, so that’s three of us that were impressed.
While I was eating, some regulars popped in to order coffee and breakfast baps to take away, while a few others visiting on their own opted to eat in. Peppers has a real community feel and the food really impressed me.
I ate Peppers’ full English breakfast at 9.30am and found I was still full at 2pm, so it certainly prepared me for the day ahead. I’m going to find it hard to resist visiting the café every week.
