President Donald Trump's new secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, accompanied federal law enforcement officers in New York City as they carried out an arrest under the administration's strict immigration agenda. The operation, which involved various federal agencies, resulted in the apprehension of multiple individuals.
Noem shared photos of the enforcement action on social media, highlighting the arrest of a man with a history of serious charges, including kidnapping, assault, and burglary. She praised Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for removing such 'criminal aliens' from the streets.
Approximately 200 federal agents from agencies such as the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, and the US Marshals participated in the operation. Teams were deployed to different locations in Washington Heights and the Bronx, resulting in over 20 individuals being taken into custody.
Among those arrested were individuals wanted for offenses like double homicide in another country and illegal weapons possession. The enforcement actions, which began early in the morning, are expected to continue throughout the week.
Notably, the New York Police Department (NYPD) was not involved in the enforcement actions. The Trump administration's recent immigration sweep has led to over 2,000 arrests in just two days, causing concern in immigrant communities.
In response to the policies of 'sanctuary cities,' the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has launched an investigation. Mayors from cities like New York, Boston, Chicago, and Denver have been invited to testify before Congress next month regarding their sanctuary city policies.
