Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas criticized the Secret Service's security measures at former President Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a gunman had a clear line of sight on the president. Mayorkas, who oversees the Secret Service, stated that such a direct line of sight to a former president should never occur.
During the rally, Trump was shot in the ear in an assassination attempt, resulting in the death of one attendee, Corey Comperatore, and critical injuries to two others. The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was subsequently killed by Secret Service agents after opening fire.
Mayorkas expressed support for President Biden's call for an independent review of the incident. He emphasized the importance of studying the event independently to make recommendations that would enhance the safety and security of protectees, a critical mission of the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security.
Despite the security lapses, Mayorkas commended the Secret Service for swiftly neutralizing the threat posed by the gunman. The upcoming independent review aims to provide insights and suggestions to prevent similar security breaches in the future.
