Home of man who helped develop one part of Merseyside up for sale

A historic house that dates back to the 1800s has been put up for sale.

The Victorian double fronted property sits on a large plot with outline planning permission for a four bedroom detached house with a separate driveway. Estate agents say the planning includes the conversion and extension of a former coach house currently on the site.

Both the property and the former coach house are accessed from Palm Grove, in Oxton. Called the Elms , the six bedroom home has an interesting history, with its former owner being Sir William Jackson.

Sir William Jackson was an industrialist, railway entrepreneur and politician who was believed to have been a generous patron of arts in Birkenhead and keen instigator of the development of the region. He lived in the house, which dates back to the 1840s, while he was chairman of Birkenhead Improvement commissioners and invited Joseph Paxton to Birkenhead to design a park.

The has been listed with a guide price of £635,000. The listing states that the price reflects the need for modernisation of the six bedroom home and the “exciting opportunity” of building a new home to the rear of the existing garden plot.

Images of the property online show that the main residence is in need of refurbishment. Typical of its period design, the rooms are symmetrical and similar in size.

There's also a number of reception rooms, with three being found on the ground floor alongside a kitchen. Six bedrooms are spread across the two top floors, with the benefit of additional rooms for storage and three bathrooms also on these levels. A basement exists and with usual access off the hall, that could be refurbished into further living accommodation.

The Brennan Ayre O’neill listing reads: “A hugely rare chance to buy a building plot with outline permission for a four bedroomed detached house with separate driveway together with a very handsome mid Victorian double fronted detached house also with its own drive, both with access from Palm Grove.

“We, as acting agent and client alike, recognise The Elms requires upgrading to suit and we believe this has been reflected in our Guide Price which of course also includes the exciting opportunity of building a significant new build to the rear of the existing garden plot.”
