Home Bargains accused of 'ripping off' customers with Mother's Day gift

When it comes to Mother's Day you can't go wrong with some chocolate, not in my house anyway.

But budget retailer Home Bargains has come under fire over a sweet treat for mums this year.

One customer shared a photo of a gift on sale in the stores - a piece of card with a message to mum where some of the words in the message are replaced with chocolate bars.

It says: "To The Best Mum Ever, Today I want to Wispa how much I love you. If I could fly around the Milky Way or even land on Mars I know I'd never find anyone as amazing as you in the entire Galaxy."

While most shoppers in the bargain Facebook group liked the idea, many slated the £4.99 price tag, saying it's something you can make much cheaper yourself.

Others criticised the retailer for stepping on the toes of small business owners, who make this sort of thing to sell locally for Mother's Day and also Father's Day.

"Not really a bargain when you can buy all that chocolate for about two quid," said one.

"Where's the bargain," said another. "Great idea for people to do at home. I wouldn't pay 4.99 for that."

A third shopper said: "I think it’s wrong how they make stuff like this when I’ve seen so many small businesses do it! They copy literally everything .. I think stuff like this should be left for small businesses trying to make a bit money."

While a fourth agreed, saying she would only spend £5 if it was from a small business creating their own gifts.

"I wouldn't pay for it from a large chain of shops," she said. "I think the profit margin for big business would be loads higher. I would feel like I'd been ripped off."

Others did point out that the price of chocolate has risen so much that you can't make things like this as cheaply as you used to.

Home Bargains said nobody was available to comment on the gift.
