Holylands resident calls for more bin collections as 'too many people living in the area'

A Holylands residents has said the area needs more waste collections as there are too many people living in the area for the bins to cope.

Ann, who has lived in the Holylands since February of this year, told Belfast Live that there is a constant problem with the bins in the area overflowing due to the numbers of people who need to use them.

She says that the problem is attracting rats and other vermin to people's properties and feels that more needs to be done to support those living there.

Ann believes that the numbers of people living in each of the properties in the area, where there can be up to 10 people in a building, has put additional strain on the bins as there are not enough to cope with all of the waste.

Ann said: "Every week the bins in the alley behind our house are overflowing, and it has nothing to do with people fly-tipping because the enteries all have gates.

"There are just too many people living here trying to use the bins and they are just not able to cope with the numbers living in each property.

"Because most properties have been converted into flats or have large groups living in them, there can be up to ten people in each one, all producing waste which is not able to go into the bins.

"Because of this the alleyways are always a state, and while the council are good at cleaning it up they return to the way they were a few days later because so many people are trying to use the bins.

"We need to have increased waste collections or more bins here because this is a constant problem that we have had to deal with since moving here."

A Belfast City Council spokesperson said: "“Every entry in the Holylands is cleaned at least twice a week, with some entries being cleaned more regularly. We also treat the public sewers in this part of Belfast on a regular basis to control rodents. Belfast City Council has noted this complaint and will be keeping the area under review.”
