Holyhead port update on EU border and customs posts as clock ticks down

Welsh Government says it is developing designs of a new Holyhead border post ahead of a fast-tracked planning application as physical checks on EU goods are set to be introduced at the end of the year.

Exports to the EU from Britain have been subject to controls since January 1, but the UK Government decided to opt for a phased approach on EU imports to give hauliers and businesses more time to adapt.

This was later delayed again from July this year to January 2022 as Border Control Post infrastructure is not ready for the checks to be carried out.

Welsh Government is responsible for new post Brexit checks on goods such as animals, plants and products of animal origin entering Wales from the Republic of Ireland and has identified a site on Parc Cybi for this. Physical checks will start from January 1 2022.

HMRC needs a nearby plot to deal with customs checks, which come under the responsibility of the UK Government and is still "identifying a suitable location" for this. Customs declarations will also be required from January 1 2022.

Welsh Government will operate from Plot 9 on Parc Cybi.

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “Work on establishing the Border Control Post at Holyhead is progressing.

“Following the consultation period we are working through the feedback received from the community and other stakeholders, and surveys are also being carried out on the site.

“Work is now under way with technical stakeholders on developing the design of the facility ahead of any planning application being submitted to Welsh Ministers through a Special Development Order.”

A HMRC spokesperson said: “HMRC has committed to provide a facility to support the Port of Holyhead and is currently identifying a suitable location close to the Welsh Government facility that will support a streamlined customer journey.”
