Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have sent a good luck message to Cymru at the World Cup tournament. Wales will kick-start their campaign against the USA on Monday evening (November 21) in Qatar.
Ahead of the match, however, the co-owners of Welsh football team, Wrexham AFC, wanted to show their support to the Red Dragons, despite the fact comedian Rob McElhenney is American. In a video sent to Wales Online, the actors were seen sitting in their car as they wished the men in red the best of luck.
Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds began the video by saying: "I just want to send my best wishes to the entire Welsh football club on their way to Qatar to compete in the World Cup. I'm actually sitting here right now with my best friend and my co-pilot at Wrexham AFC - Mr Rob McElhenney." In response, the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star jokingly also wanted to wish the best of luck to Wales, but "not too much". He added: "Maybe even a draw - a draw would be nice. Play your hearts out, but no...". Ryan Reynolds then interrupted with: "So sorry about him. Crush all of your enemies, drink the blood of your enemies. Rob and I are actually in the car right now because we are driving to Qatar."
Rob added: "We are on our way to Qatar. Play your hearts out boys... not too hard though!" This came after the stars won an award last week during a special Welsh concert in New York. The ceremony was part of a star-studded event at Sony Hall in Times Square, which was set to mark Wales' upcoming game against USA in Qatar's World Cup next week.
To recognise their contribution to putting Wales on a global platform, S4C partnered up with the Welsh Government, the Football Association of Wales and Urdd to present the duo with the "Diolch y Ddraig" (Dragon Award), which represented a "national appreciation for the sensitivity and respect shown by Reynolds and McElhenney to Wales".
Meanwhile, celebrations in Dubai and Qatar are in full swing ahead of the game. Footage of hundreds of fans gathering in pubs and hotel bars have been shared on social media, showing the Red Wall singing various Welsh songs such as Yma o Hyd, Calon Lan and the Welsh national anthem as well as other popular football chants.
Hotel - the InterContinental Doha The City - will become the unofficial home for Wales fans for at least the next ten days with 1,600 of them set to party there today before Wales' game with the USA. It is thought that between 2,500 and 3,000 Welsh fans have travelled to Doha. Those expected at the InterContinental Doha The City on Monday include Dafydd Iwan and Welsh supporters band, The Barry Horns.
