Hollywood stars react to 'torturous' Wrexham win over title rivals Notts County

Wrexham's Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have delivered a stunned reaction after seeing their Wrexham team edge a National League thriller with Notts County at the Racecourse Ground this afternoon.

The Welsh team won by the odd goal in five - and saw an injury-time penalty saved by veteran keeper Ben Foster - to take control of the National League promotion race.

John Bostock and Kyle Cameron were both on target as Notts County led 1-0 and then pegged the hosts back to 2-2, before falling behind again. Cedwyn Scott’s last-gasp penalty was then saved by 40-year-old Foster to ensure a 3-2 victory for the hosts.

Hollywood stars Reynolds and McElhenney were both in attendance at the Racecourse Ground after receiving the freedom of the borough at a civic ceremony earlier in the day.

They bought Wrexham in November 2020 and the club is featured in a Netflix documentary called 'Welcome to Wrexham'. A key chapter of the new series played out this Bank Holiday weekend, and the owners could not hide their delight post-match.

"I don't feel like I have a heart anymore," Reynolds told BT Sport after the game. "I think I used all the beats that I had left during that match.

"That was unlike anything I've ever seen before. And indicative of all of you lifers who have watched and participated in this game, this beautiful and torturous game.

"I'm actually grateful in this moment that I didn't care about this years ago, because it would have eaten me alive. That was really something."

"It's troubling how hooked I am. I'm genuinely at a loss for words in this moment, I don't quite know how to quantify what just happened."

McElhenney took to Twitter after the match, posting: "I can’t believe there was a time when I thought football was boring. And that’s why you go get Ben Foster."
