Detectives are treating the deaths of British couple Andrew and Dawn Searle as a murder-suicide following what appears to be a botched staged burglary at their home in France. The bodies were discovered in the small hamlet of Les Pesquies, near Toulouse, after neighbors became alarmed by the couple’s prolonged absence during their regular dog walks.
Andrew, a former financial investigator, and his wife Dawn, who left Britain a decade ago to settle in the picturesque town, were found under tragic circumstances. On February 6, a horrified friend discovered Dawn’s body outside the residence. She had suffered a severe head injury, with jewelry scattered around her, suggesting that a struggle had taken place. Andrew’s body was later found inside the house, according to the Daily Mail.
Early theories suggested that Dawn had attempted to flee from an unknown assailant, a notion supported by the scene inside the home: cupboards and drawers left open, and furniture upended as if in a hurried escape. However, new insights from the investigation have cast doubt on this theory. If the attack had taken place in the garden, investigators argue, the proximity of neighboring houses would likely have meant that any screams or commotion would have been heard.
One investigator quoted by The Sunday Post stated: “The Searle house is extremely close to other houses, and the noise of screams would have carried. In fact, nobody heard anything. “What is very likely is that the victim was killed inside the house, with doors and windows shut on a winter’s night, and then her body dumped in the garden.”
This evidence now points toward a scenario where the crime scene was deliberately manipulated. Nicolas Rigot-Muller, the Rodez prosecutor leading the inquiry, remarked that the incident was “a marital crime followed by a suicide.” He added, “If the couple had been attacked by a stranger, they would have probably shouted, alerting their neighbors.”
It is believed that Andrew Searle may have attempted to stage a burglary to explain the crime to the authorities before ultimately taking his own life. Forensic examinations have revealed no defensive wounds on Andrew, nor any indication that another person had been present during the incident. Dawn Searle, remembered fondly in the community and as the mother of former Hollyoaks star Callum Searle, had recently celebrated a wedding in 2023, with Callum himself walking her down the aisle.
Residents are in deep shock. One neighbor, Bénédicte, described the couple as “absolutely adorable, we would often meet like this simply walking our dogs around the village.” She told the BBC, “We are very shocked, of course we are.” Another local, who knew Dawn well, remarked, “Her mood was very good, [and she was] smiley,” highlighting how unexpected the tragedy has been for the community.
Police continue their investigation, and no arrests have been made as further inquiries unfold.
