Holly Willoughby torn over Matt Hancock's I'm A Celebrity backlash as 'he's human'

This Morning's Holly Willoughby said Hancock was "just a human", during a discussion on Thursday about the former Health Secretary's fee for I'm A Celebrity 2022.

Hancock was revealed to be a last-minute signing for the ITV series, hosted by Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly, and he will be a late arrival in the jungle.

Amid backlash over the signing of Hancock, and his decision to take part, it's been reported he will earn £400,000 for the stint.

Holly and co-host Phillip Schofield discussed this news, and the backlash, with show guests Vanessa Feltz and Nick Ferrari on Thursday, leading to Hancock being slammed.

Vanessa said she was "infuriated" by everything about Hancock doing the show, as she hit back at claims over his reasons for signing up.

But Holly admitted she was torn about the backlash and him doing the series, agreeing with Vanessa's comments but also remembering he is "human".

Vanessa had said: "Everything about this is infuriating, absolutely everything. Especially the really self-serving article he wrote yesterday where he said it was very important indeed to get out amongst your voters, and talk to the people and not be in an ivory tower.

"What does he think the jungle is if it's not an ivory tower? It's a TV studio in the jungle that very few people are invited to."

Holly suggested he might be trying to reach a new audience, to which Vanessa said that anything he is hoping to promote will be on the "cutting room floor".

Phillip then defended: "You say it's a TV studio, it's not a TV studio, they're out in the jungle."

Vanessa then pointed out: "But only very few people ever get lucky enough to go into it."

Phil went on: "The thing is you hear people come back all the time saying they are surprised they do actually take your phone away from you.

"There literally is no communication with the outside world. He claims he will still be able to talk to his constituents while he is on the show."

Nick said this was "ridiculous", and agreed a lot of what he says will be "edited out", before suggesting his political career is in "real threat".

Vanessa then called out Hancock's "disgraceful behaviour" during the pandemic, and defended other MPs for doing reality TV as they "weren't in charge" during the pandemic and didn't "break the rules".

It's then that Holly shared how torn she was about the backlash, saying: "It's so difficult isn't it, because he is just a human."

As Vanessa pulled a face, Holly went on: "I know and I heard everything you were saying just now, and I flip between, 'Oh God no, you're absolutely right' to 'Oh God...', you just can't, I don't know. I find it...."

As Holly trailed off, Vanessa recalled how he "broke his own rules" before taking aim at him suggesting there were lots of things she wanted to say but couldn't on live TV.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
