Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield 'booed' after National Television Award win

Phillip Schofield made a heartfelt plea to fans as he accepted a National Television Award for This Morning. As the daytime ITV show was announced as the winner for the Daytime category, Phillip put his head in his hands and held back tears.

The crowd around them audibly booed as they were named the winners. He made a touching plea to fans at home as he said: "Please don't think we ever get complacent. And please don't think we ever take this for granted."

The TV presenter added: "This means so much to us every year, especially this year, We have the most amazing team, I have the best friend and we the best boss."

Addressing the general public, Holly said: "Thank you so much. This means everything because it is voted by you and I think This Morning has a very special relationship with you. You make our show for us, you really do."

Despite the positivity from the presenters, fans on Twitter couldn't help but notice the boos. Scott Bryan, a TV critic and broadcaster, tweeted: "A source at the ceremony says that there were some boos in the room when This Morning won an #NTAs, but boos stopped during the speech."

Joel said: "95% sure #ITV just drowned out the audible boos This Morning received with a false cheering track, which has to be the most tragic thing I've witnessed. #NTA #NTAAwards."

Another user said: "Oh noooo the boos! Holly and Phillip look like they want the ground to swallow them up." Meanwhile, Luke added: "Did I just hear boos for Holly and Phil? Well done to This Morning for the win though #NTA".

It has been an especially difficult year for Phil and Holly as people called for them to be sacked just weeks ago. They were accused of 'jumping the queue' in a scandal nicknamed 'queuegate' as they went to see the Queen lying in state. However, ITV fully supported them and assured the public that they were there only for work, The Liverpool Echo reports.

Phillip decided that Alison Hammond should also have a word as they passed the mic over to her. She has quickly become a favourite on the show, and was up for an award for Best Presenter - however she was beaten to the post by Ant and Dec.

Jokingly she said that she should have won her own award. But then she went on to praise her competitors for also being great as she celebrated This Morning's win.
