Hollow Knight Silksong delayed as the indie game keeps getting bigger

Hollow Knight Silksong is delayed indefinitely while developer Team Cherry keeps working on the game, which is reportedly growing in unexpected ways. Head of marketing and publishing Matthew Griffin posted a brief update on Twitter and said more news would follow when the indie game gets closer to release.

“We had planned to release in the 1st half of 2023, but development is still continuing,” Griffin said. “We’re excited by how the game is shaping up, and it’s gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can.”

The last time Team Cherry showed off Silksong was in summer 2022’s Xbox showcase, with no mention during the publisher’s first presentation of 2023. News of a delay isn’t entirely surprising.

Nor is it unexpected that Silksong is bigger than the team first planned. The Hollow Knight sequel follows Hornet – princess of Deepnest and erstwhile antagonist in the first game – on her adventures in Pharloom after monsters kidnap her. A new world, new Silk skills to replace the Knight’s Soul skills, more monsters, bigger challenges, and new quests and NPCs – it’s a tall order, with the added pressure of fan expectations after Hollow Knight’s success on all platforms.

Griffin didn’t indicate how far away from completion development is, so we may see Silksong news during Summer Game Fest, or, like the Switch 2, it might still be far off beyond the horizon.
