Holland is a Prime Video thriller starring Nicole Kidman as Nancy Vandergroot, a teacher, wife and mother who lives an idyllic life in the tulip-filled town of Holland, Michigan. However, she then discovers a secret that turns her world upside down. Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen also stars as Nancy’s husband, Fred while Gael García Bernal is her friendly colleague, Dave Delgado.

Holland plot
Nancy Vandergroot is a teacher and lives with her husband Fred, a pillar of the community, and son Harry in the town of Holland in Michigan. The town takes pride in celebrating its Dutch roots and Nancy and her family embrace this joy. But then Nancy and her colleague Dave uncover a secret and learn that nothing in their lives is as it seems.

Nicole Kidman, who plays the meticulous Nancy in Holland, says: "When we meet Nancy, nothing in particular about her life is going wrong. We see her house and family, and she’s something of a picture of what we’re told success and stability look like. But we very quickly see that, even though her life appears all well and good, she doesn't feel like it is. I think a lot of people can connect to that feeling.
"Nancy sees Fred as her rock, her source of stability, and that dependence makes her resentful of him. But Matthew brings such rich charisma, charm, and earnestness to Fred that he makes it understandably hard for Nancy to feel unhappy with him. Fred is perfect. Fred gives Nancy everything she asks for. So, why does she feel this dissatisfaction?"
"When Nancy feels invisible or stuck in a rut in her life, Dave sees and appreciates Nancy in a way no one else does. Through Dave’s eyes, Nancy is able to understand herself again.
"When filming this, it was so important to track Nancy's emotional journey on screen. We needed to make sure viewers would see past her life’s picturesque veneer and feel Nancy's underlying discomfort and desires.
"I’d describe the story as dark, funny, suspenseful, but also thrilling, romantic and relatable and empowering. That’s the brilliance of Andrew’s writing. He wrote a story that has an initial twist that cranks up the tension and intrigue. And then those twists and turns just keep coming. Matthew Macfadyen, 50, who plays Nancy’s husband Fred in Holland, says: "This is a story that you think is one thing but then it turns into something entirely different, and that’s always the most enjoyable journey for an actor Fred’s a descendent of Dutch immigrants, well liked in the town, a stalwart church member and a man who’s particularly keen on working every night on his model train set. He’s a character I could have a lot of fun with by dialling things up or down depending on the scene!"
Matthew Macfadyen is known worldwide for his role as Tom Wambsgans in the hit series Succession. He has also starred in Ripper Street, Deadpool and Wolverine, Stonehouse, Operation Mincemeat, Quiz and Spooks.
