Holidaymaker raped in front of husband on beach by ‘man who offered massage’

A holidaymaker in India was raped in front of her partner, local media has reported.

Police say the British woman was on a beach in Goa when she was attacked by a man on June 2.

A spokesperson said on Monday that they had arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly raping a woman at the Sweet Lake in North Goa.

The man is accused of raping the woman under the excuse of giving her a massage. Local media reports that he's said to be part of a group that offers illegal massages near the Arambol beach.

The woman is understood to have made a formal complaint on Monday after consulting with her family and the British embassy in India, Mirror UK reports.

Police say they swooped in and arrested the man within an hour of the complaint being made.

The accused had previously worked as a school librarian, a senior official said.

They said: "We have contacted the police station concerned to get his past records. Currently, he is not working as a librarian."

Both the accused and the woman were sent to a hospital last night for a medical examination.

The man is set to appear before a local court next Monday.

An FCDO Spokesperson said: “We are providing consular support to a British National in Goa”.

Goa is a popular destination for Irish tourists due to its tropical beaches and unique culture.
