Holiday travel surge expected, airports bracing for record-breaking crowds

York City calm before the storm as holiday travel gears up.

The holiday season in New York City is currently experiencing a refreshing calm. However, could this tranquility be the calm before the storm? It just might be, as the upcoming weeks are expected to bring a surge of travelers. Triple A, the American Automobile Association, is predicting record-setting air travel over Christmas and the New Year. And if that wasn't enough, road travel is also expected to be bustling. Triple A estimates that more than 115 million people will be traveling 50 miles or more between Friday and the first day of the new year, about 2.5 million more people than last year.

At Reagan National Airport, the buzz is already starting to pick up. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has recently updated its forecast, now anticipating that 2.65 million people will be screened at airports across the country today. And the numbers are only expected to rise, reaching 2.69 million people tomorrow. The lines at airport security checkpoints are getting longer, as depicted in footage from the 7 a.m. rush at Reagan National Airport.

United Airlines, one of the major carriers, is preparing for a busy period. They expect approximately nine million travelers in total, with 4,000 flights a day, representing a 12% increase compared to the same time last year. Fortunately, the airlines performed well during the Thanksgiving rush, with only 20,000 delays and 250 cancellations reported.

To stay ahead of any potential challenges, United Airlines is focused on being prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws its way. They had fortunate weather during Thanksgiving, aside from some ice and snow at some of their hubs, but they are ready to respond quickly and effectively if the weather takes an unexpected turn.

As travelers prepare for their journeys, there are a few tips to keep in mind. Arriving at least two hours early is highly recommended by the TSA. Additionally, allotting extra time for parking is essential, as many airport garages are already full. Booking parking spots in advance is highly recommended to avoid any last-minute hassles.

Another tip from the TSA is to ensure that any gifts being brought along are not yet wrapped. This makes the inspection process easier, and you can save the wrapping for when you reach your destination. Lastly, if possible, it is advisable to carry on your belongings instead of checking a bag. This prevents potential issues of lost or delayed luggage, as some travelers experienced during the rush last year.

So, as the calm prevails in New York City for now, the stage is set for a bustling holiday season. Travelers should brace themselves for the upcoming surge in air and road travel, and take necessary precautions to ensure a smooth journey and a joyous holiday celebration.
