People have been left gobsmacked after realising why there are holes in the back of extension cords.
While you would be forgiven for thinking they serve no purpose, the small holes can in fact be incredibly useful.
The oft-forgotten holes can be used to fit the cords, as a DIY lover explained in a now-viral post to TikTok.

The social media user, who often posts about restoration projects and furniture flips, shared the handy tip online - to the delight of many.
In a video titled, "how to fit an extension cable the easy way in less than 60 seconds," @stusrestohut demonstrated how to make the most of the little-known trick.
Explaining how to cleverly store the appliances, the TikToker recommended adding tape to the back of the panel. "Tape it, cut to shape and make the holes," they said.
The DIY fan then removed the tape, before sticking it to the place where they planned to fix the equipment. "Put it where you need it, make sure it's level and drill holes," the instructions explained.
Finally, "put in screws and you're done," as the expert recommends. As demonstrated, the extension cord then sits easily over the screws, which were placed on the side of a table, in this instance.
What's more, the quick solution will likely benefit the TikToker in many ways. Not only does the trick help clear wires off the floor, but it also gives easy access to the extension cord.
The video delighted viewers, who were quick to praise the "brilliant" suggestion.
Replying to a follow-up video about the same tip, one commenter said: "LOVE this tip!!! tried it earlier, just makes my life easier," while another confirmed: "It definitely works."
The Mirror reached out to Electrical Safety First and reported they confirmed the tip is safe to follow.
A member of the charity's technical team explained the practice is "perfectly safe", with this being the intended use of the keyhole slots.
