Hogwarts Legacy: Tips for beginners

Hogwarts Legacy is available right now for players who have Early Access pre-orders and a New Zealand account. We’ve had a chance to get deep into the wizarding world already, and we know what you need to do and what you should avoid. It’s a surprisingly deep RPG, that you will spend dozens of hours questing your way through, so it’s good to know where to start.

Here’s how to make the most of your time in Hogwarts Legacy.

Take your time to explore

There are a lot of small details squeezed into every corner of Hogwarts Legacy, and plenty of things for you to find. There are bandit camps and spider dens you can wipe out and take the spoils for your own, and hidden chests all over the school. Completing Merlin Trials, and finding Floo Flames and beast spawns will all help you on your journey.

If you don’t explore a little, you will miss all of this, which could leave you unprepared later on. They aren’t on the main quest line, and are very easy to run straight past, so make sure you take the time to look around.

Sell gear often

In Hogwarts Legacy, there is limited space in your inventory for gear, and there is a lot of it that you will want to collect. It’s not split into types, so you won’t be able to pick up gloves if you’re already stacking a nice collection of hats. However, there’s no real reason to hold onto your low-level items, so sell them at the shop and keep your gear slots often. If you like the look of your low-level gear, you don’t have to worry.

Once you have collected a piece of gear you’ll always be able to wear it, even if you sell it. In the gear menu if you change to ‘appearance’, you’ll be able to make your high-level gear look like anything you want. This means that you can keep the stat boosts of the best gear, while having whatever style you like, giving more reason to sell off your duds.

Complete character quests

You’ll find characters who ask you to help them out all over Hogwarts, and you should try to complete these as often as possible. They will often take you to new parts of Hogwarts, and can even teach you new spells. Make sure you talk to NPCs when you can, and take them up on their offers as soon as they ask.

Main quest timing

While you should take people up on their offers, it’s important not to ignore the main questline. If you spend some time exploring the wilderness around Hogwarts, you will level up very quickly. Enemies and gear that you find around the world scale to your level, so it doesn’t matter if you save it for later. The main quest will give you access to broomsticks, mounts, new rooms and abilities, all of which will help you out with your side missions you can complete later.

Unlock the Room of Requirement

The Room of Requirement is your main base in Hogwarts Legacy, and you can deck it out in a number of ways. You can grow plants here, mix potions, and put vivariums here to house beasts that you collect. Work with Professor Weasley as soon as possible to unlock this room to use.

Once you’ve got the Room of Requirement, it’s time to work on the plants and potions we mentioned above. Plants will need different-sized pots in order to grow them, and potions require a mix of plants and materials in order to make them. Both plants and potions are required for a number of quests, so purchase your essential furniture from Tomes and Scrolls as soon as you can.

The Room also unlocks a nabsack which you can use to collect beasts. The easiest way to do this is by casting Accio or Arresto Momentum on beasts before using the nabsack. If you have vivariums in your room you will then be able to breed them and sell them at Brood and Peck in Hogsmeade.

Hogsmeade shops

We’ve already spoken about a few of Hogsmeade’s shops, and all of them are essential to your journey through Hogwarts. Dogweed and Deathcap is to the north of Hogsmeade and is the only place you can buy a variety of useful seeds. A number of potion recipes can also only be found in J. Pippin’s Potions so you’ll need to visit here too. Gladrags Wizardwear also sells gear that scales with your level, which can be useful if you need better equipment in a pinch.

Flying lessons

You get access to a broomstick pretty early on in Hogwarts Legacy and with that the ability to fly. As you work through your quests you’ll be able to unlock flying lessons which will help you develop your skills. You can purchase brooms from Spintwitches Sporting Needs, and then fly around the grounds that surround Hogwarts.
