Hocus Pocus 2 fans puzzled by change to Mary Sanderson they can't unsee in sequel

If there is one film that everyone is talking about this spooky season, it’s Hocus Pocus 2. The fun-filled dark-humoured comedy is the long-awaited - and we’re talking nearly 30 years - sequel to the original film that debuted in 1993 and became a cult classic Halloween flick, loved by kids and adults alike.

Following the movie's release on Thursday, there has been an outpouring of love for the nostalgic follow up that sees the return of the famous Sanderson Sisters as they once again wreak havoc on Halloween.

Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker reprise their roles as the notorious Winnifred, Mary and Sarah respectively and fans have commented on how reminiscent it is to see them back as the iconic trio.

But a few eagle-eyed fans have spotted a very subtle difference between Kathy’s character, Mary Sanderson, in the latest flick compared with the original 90s version. And it’s all in her smile.

The observant film fans took to Twitter to share what they’d noticed.

One user said: "Was anyone else bothered that Mary’s mouth was doing the clenching thing on the wrong side though? In the original it was on her left. In the sequel, her right. No? Just me?"

Another said: "Hocus Pocus 2 is a great movie, I loved it but, did anyone else see Mary’s mouth? It has changed since the first movie…"

One eager viewer even admitted: "First thing I noticed when the new Hocus Pocus trailer came out was how Mary’s mouth droops the wrong way."

But before too many people could comment, actress Kathy Najimy came out and explained exactly why she chose to reverse her famous smile for the second film. Speaking to EW, Najimy described how although she originally improvised her lopsided grin for the first film, she had to switch it for the sequel as it's no longer comfortable for her to do it on the other side.

Anticipating fans would notice, she told EW: "It's on the other side mainly because it's so hard for me to do it on the side I did it on 30 years ago. I'm sure the fans are going to go into deep detail about why it's on the other side."

However, the film does account for Mary’s change in smile, Najimy explained as they added a scene to the movie to show it swapping sides. She said “We can justify it because there's a scene at the beginning where Winnie slaps me, and my mouth goes to the other side, and then she slaps me again and it goes to the other side, and sticks.”

Although hardcore Hocus Pocus fans are likely to notice the change, no one can deny the film is a fun and entertaining modern take on the original - no matter which way Mary smiles.
