HMV commits future to Swansea city centre as store is put up 'for let'

A long-running music store in Swansea has committed its future to the city as the shop it has occupied for generations has been advertised as to let.

HMV, one of the longest surviving units in The Quadrant Shopping Centre, is currently being marketed by real estate agents Green & Partners as being up for grabs, with it noting "the unit is available subject to vacant possession".

As the advertisement says itself, the unit occupies "an integral part of the Quadrant Shopping Centre", attracting heavy footfall.

But in a statement, the company has insisted there are no plans to leave the city any time soon.

A spokesman for HMV said: “We have no plans to leave Swansea, where music, film, TV and pop culture fans have long enjoyed shopping with us.

"We’re committed to physical retail, and will be opening further shops across the UK over the coming year.”

The Quadrant has experienced an upturn in fortunes as of late with the arrival of stores like Rugby Heaven and Moti, The Entertainer and The Clothing Culture, but it has lost some big name high-street retailers like Debenhams, Burton, Dorothy Perkins and Animal.

HMV has been one of the long-standing fixtures of the shopping centre, despite being at risk in the past. The company went into administration in 2013, and again in 2019, when we reported how the store was among those across the country set to close, but after the company avoided administration, it carried on trading.

The Quadrant said it was unable to comment on the matter at present.
