‘Tis the season to be jolly, and how better to celebrate than host a big piss-up somewhere sunny?
That’s what HMRC appears to have done. In its recent expenses disclosures, the government body said it spent nearly £3,000 on a ‘conference’ called Offshore Ale.
Turns out it was just a typo. HMRC told Spy it was actually an event to discuss tax avoidance tactics known as Offshore Alert.
A little clumsy of the HMRC team, eh? Perhaps a staffer had been on the sauce while filling out the form. And to think they give you a fine for mistakes made in tax returns “because of a lack of reasonable care”…
