HMP Shotts prison investigation after inmate dies behind bars

A middle-aged prisoner has died in a Lanarkshire jail.

An investigation will be held into the circumstances of Robert Dickie's death following news of his passing.

The 55-year-old was a prisoner at HMP Shotts after being jailed at Glasgow High Court in 2012.

The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) confirmed his death on May 27 in a statement published online last week and a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) will be held in due course.

The news comes just days after details emerged of 69-year-old Richard Stevenson's passing at Barlinnie prison while on remand from Glasgow Sheriff Court. An inquiry into his death will also be held at a later date.

FAIs are mandatory in Scotland when someone dies in custody, they are held in public and presided over by a sheriff, who hears evidence and issues recommendations where necessary.
