Hit drama Succession will end after season 4, creator confirms

Succession’s upcoming fourth season will see the hit drama officially come to an end.

Creator Jesse Armstrong has confirmed that the conclusion of the HBO series, which stars Brian Cox, has always been "present" in his mind but has left him “conflicted”.

He said: "You know, there’s a promise in the title of Succession. I’ve never thought this could go on forever. The end has always been kind of present in my mind.

"From season two, I’ve been trying to think: Is it the next one, or the one after that, or is it the one after that?"

However, when filming on series four started Armstrong said he was “not 100 percent sure” that ending the show was the right move and it was a “difficult decision”.

“I feel deeply conflicted,” he added.

Succession focuses on dogmatic media mogul and family patriarch Logan Roy, played by Cox, and his grip over his four children who are at pains to impress him and fight over his legacy.

Speaking of how the beloved show will wrap up, Armstrong told The New Yorker magazine: "I got together with a few of my fellow writers before we started the writing of season four, in about November, December, 2021...

“We played out various scenarios. We could do a couple of short seasons, or two more seasons.

"Or we could go on for ages and turn the show into something rather different, and be a more rangy, freewheeling kind of fun show, where there would be good weeks and bad weeks.

"Or we could do something a bit more muscular and complete, and go out sort of strong and that was definitely always my preference..."

Last year, Cox described Armstrong as "an absolute genius" before revealing that he often only receives his Succession scripts two days before shooting.

He added: "Getting a script is like getting gold, [but] I like to learn the lines."
