Jake Passmore made history for Ireland by winning a silver medal at the World Junior Diving Championships.
The 17-year-old came second in the 1m springboard final at the Championships in Montreal on Wednesday. After 10 rounds of diving, the youngster scored 431.65 points to finish in second place in a competition involving 41 divers in total.
Passmore started with a bang and scored 61.10 points for his first attempt. This was the Irishman's best score in the final, with scores of 55.50, 44.55, 58.50 in his next three dives, Passmore eventually finished as runner-up just 16.1 points behind eventual winner Matteo Santoro of Italy.

Swim Ireland Head of Diving, Damian Ball said of Passmore's success, “This was another strong performance from Jake, he is an excellent 1m springboard diver and he’s now added a World Junior silver medal to the European Junior bronze medal he collected earlier in the year.
"To maintain a consistent high standard of diving throughout 5.5hrs of competitive diving in one day, really demonstrates Jake’s resilience and mental toughness.
"We are all delighted that he’s made history by winning Ireland’s first ever diving medal at a World Junior Championships. Jake and his coach Marc Holdsworth will now turn their attention to the 3m Springboard event taking place on Thursday.”
This is the second time in the space of six months that the youngster has made history for Ireland. Back in June, the Leeds-based diver won a first ever medal for Ireland at the European Junior Championship when he took home the bronze medal in the 1m event.
Passmore will return to action tomorrow at 9am (Irish) for the 3m Springboard preliminaries, with the final getting underway at 21:20.
