Historic Scottish castle with links to Mary Queen of Scots hits the market

A HISTORIC Scottish castle with ties to Mary Queen of Scots has hit the market.

Seton Castle, which was built in 1789 by Robert Adam who designed other spectacular buildings in Scotland like Dumfries House and Culzean Castle, has gone up for sale.

Located in Longniddry, East Lothian, the four-storey and 13-bedroom castle will set any buyer back by at least £8 million.

It was historically a preferred retreat for Mary, Queen of Scots, and fell into disrepair after the Jacobite rebellion in the 18th century.

Seton Castle was then bought by Alexander MacKenzie near the end of the century, who rebuilt the stunning building back to its former glory.

Now the U-shaped mansion has a working stable, a cinema room, a billiard room, a helicopter pad, and a private pub to go along with the 13 acres of land.

James Whitson, director of residential sales at Rettie Edinburgh, told STV he was delighted to be entrusted with the sale of the historic castle.

He said: “Rettie are delighted to be entrusted with the sale of Seton Castle for the third time in 20 years. “It really is a Robert Adam Masterpiece, that has been restored to the finest calibre, to create a superb family home.

“I have memories as a child from ten years old, attending Boxing Day lunches there for years, and I never thought that in my later life and property career I would have the honour of selling this magnificent castle three times.”
