Historic Lanark Lanimer Day celebrations set to return to former glory in June

Lanark Lanimer celebrations will return this year and promise to be bigger and better than ever.

The pandemic saw a significantly scaled down affair in 2021 having been postponed to much later in the year, while the 2020 event was cancelled altogether.

But the popular event has been given the go-ahead to resume as normal this year with the celebrations beginning on June 5.

That sees the Kirkin' of the Lord Cornet Elect take place with further processions throughout the week.

The Lanark Lanimer Day will then be held on Thursday, June 9 where a morning procession followed by the Crowning Ceremony takes place.

The day then concludes with the Lord Cornet's Declaration before an "evening spectacular" for all to enjoy.

And the Lanimer Committee is delighted to announce that Caitlin Stewart of Lanark Primary school has been selected as Lanimer Queen Elect for 2022.

Meanwhile, this year's Lanimer Champion will be Lewis Hannah of Lanark Grammar School.

It will be Lewis' second appearance in the Lanimer Court having been an Outrider last year.

This year's Crowning Lady will be Karen Brown, a well known member of the Lanimer Committee and has been Court Convener for the last 12 years, having joined the Committee in 1988.

Lord Cornet Elect Derek McGuinness has been reintroduced after he was selected in January 2020, Derek’s role was deferred for both 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.

Preparations are now well underway for the historic event in Lanark and dedicated locals have been working round the clock to ensure the occasion will be better than ever.

Vice chairman of the committee, Gordon Gray, told Lanarkshire Live : "We're trying to get it back up to what it was.

"In terms of the Lanimer Queen and Court it's going to be bigger than it's ever been.

"Due to the pandemic, there was over a year where kids missed out so we opened that up to more children this year so everyone got a chance to be involved - so there's an additional 12 children in the Court this year.

"We're hoping we're well back on the route to normality with it, even though the event in September was still very successful even with the restrictions.

"It's good when people come together to put these things on and celebrate our history that way.

"It's really exciting. We have a very strong committee of dedicated people who do a lot of work behind the scenes to make it all happen so it's great when you see things coming together.

"Especially, seeing things that haven't happened in a year or two come back to life as well."

Despite last year's restrictions, a crowd of 5000 still turned out on Lanimer Day - with more expected this time.

The event returns to its normal locations with processions taking place through the town's High Street with the Crowning Ceremony taking place at Lanark Cross.
