Historic Gothic-style lodge in Singleton Park for sale with a sea view for £170k

If unusual is a requirement near the top of your list for your next home or business, then this Gothic-style park lodge has just come onto the market and it doesn't get much more unique than this.

The lodge was built in 1854 to a design by London architect Henry Woodyer for Swansea copper magnate John Henry Vivian.

The majestic stone building rises up out of a park wall in an early Gothic-style that ensures it turns heads.

The lodge, which was empty from the summer of 2009 when the park keeper moved out until it was sold at auction to a private buyer, is of significance to Welsh property history, and not just as a visual treat.

Called Brynmill Lodge, the distinctive building achieved a Grade II listing from Cadw in August 1989, updated in November 1993.

It was listed as being of group value with nearby manor house Singleton Abbey, the former home of Lord Swansea and now part of the Swansea University campus.

The lodge, found at the entrance to Singleton Park, Swansea consists of a square three-storey tower with one room on each floor plus an extra two-storey and single-storey block at the back, all attached to a mock defensive gateway and screen wall.

The windows and doors have dressed stone surrounds and if you look closely you'll see pointed gothic arched heads that give the building its Gothic-style. Period features to be found inside include beamed ceiling and leaded windows.

Internally, the property spans three floors in the main tower, with a room on each level before the house expands out into the rear blocks.

The estate agents states that there's a bathroom on the ground floor, two bedrooms on the first floor and a third bedroom on the second floor, with impressive sea views across Swansea Bay to enjoy from the upper storeys.

There is also an enclosed, level courtyard but the gateway arch attached to the lodge, although a striking feature, is not part of the sale.

The location of the lodge is another tick on the unusual list too, tucked away in the south east corner of Singleton Park at the entrance, it's a surprise to happen upon it as you drive or walk by.

But it's not the only distinctive building within or around this popular park by the beach.

Other lodges and little houses to discover include Lower Sketty Green Lodge, North Lodge and Swiss Cottage, which as the name suggests has a facade heavily influenced by alpine design.

The lodge and the park are within walking distance of the beach, city centre and university, making it a well located place to call home or as a business base, subject to planning consent.

Whoever buys this slice of history can arguably claim to then own one of Wales' most distinctive properties.

The lodge is for sale for offers over £170,000, call Savills Cardiff on 029 2036 8926 to find out more.
