AN HISTORIC Glasgow library is set to reopen after a £4 million transformation project.
Elder Park Library and Community Hub will welcome visitors through its new-and-improved doors from Monday, June 24.
The upgrades include a full refurbishment of the interior and exterior, a new community kitchen, more toilets, improved baby changing facilities, and more bookable areas for people to use.
First opening in 1903, Elder Park Library is an A-listed building protected by Historic Environment Scotland because of its architectural and historic interest.
It is a much-loved and iconic piece of local history and was gifted to Govan by Mrs Isabella Elder, the wife of Govan industrialist John Elder who inspired the name of the nearby Elder Park.
Her work as a philanthropist advocating for the people of Govan led to her becoming a legend in Glasgow's history books and being named one of the 'greatest' Glaswegians.
We previously reported that Glasgow City Council had approved plans for a revamp project in 2022.
All of the building's new additions connect to a system which monitors temperature and ventilation, aiming to reduce its carbon footprint and improve the overall visitor experience and safety measures.
The project has been delivered by Glasgow Life who worked with Elderpark Housing Association, Elder Park Library and Community Hub.
Andrew Olney, director of libraries, sport and communities at Glasgow Life, said: “Glasgow’s libraries are highly valued by the people who use them, and this project ensures there is a modern, fit-for-purpose hub at the heart of the Elder Park community.
"The new-look facility offers visitors a welcoming space with free access to books, digital resources, information, and support.”
Gary Dalziel, chief executive of Elderpark Housing Association, added: “Elderpark Housing Association is thrilled to see Elder Park Library and Community Hub opening after its extensive renovations.
"It will provide a stunning facility located in the heart of the community which, as well as re-invigorating the use of the refurbished library, will also create a first-class new community hub, all located within a historic and much-loved building in the area.”
Elder Park Library and Community Hub will be open six days a week, from 1pm to 8pm on Mondays and 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday.
