Historic former Edinburgh nursing home could be converted into flats

A historic B-listed Edinburgh mansion consisting of 13 bedrooms could be converted into a plush block of flats.

Plans have been lodged to turn Strathmore House, on Church Hill, into a housing block consisting of six flats with the building having been disused for years after it stopped operating as a nursing home.

In February, Edinburgh Live reported how the mansion was listed for sale for a whopping £1.5million. Now, new images have been released by the applicant, Strathedin Properties Limited, showing the major transformation.

Despite the exterior of the building remaining, if the plans are granted, several significant changes will be carried out within the interior including balconies on some flats looking out onto the grounds below.

Dating from 1870, renovation work was carried out in 2002. The property only consists of two main floors and a basement and is in a similar sandstone style to the surrounding street.

The applicant states that the change of us will also be altered as technically, the building remains listed as a care home.

As stated in previous plans to sell the huge building, the area in question could also play into the buyer's hands being near the vibrant Morningside which consists of a theatre, dozens of shops and is close to the city centre.

The current setup of the property includes has a lift, lounge, dining room, laundry, garden, activities room, library, and an assisted bathing facility.

Sellers Rettie add: "Strathmore House comprises of a former residential care home that was recently vacated and is now available for residential refurbishment or redevelopment purposes."
