Historic football trophy on display at Enniskillen Castle

A historic football trophy is on display at Enniskillen Castle this week after it was first one by a local side more than 100 years ago.

The Lipton Cup, also known as the Peace Cup, will be on display at the Co Fermanagh museum until Friday as part of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council's Sport Heritage project.

This historic cup was originally played for in 1913 and was won by Enniskillen Corinthians. The physical cup itself never actually made it to Fermanagh until this week.

It has been loaned to the museum from Clones soccer club as part of the heritage project.

The cup was only played for in the 1913/14 season having been set up by local clubs in Fermanagh, Cavan and Monaghan, with the Enniskillen side coming out on top.

With the outbreak of World War One, the partition of Ireland and the Troubles it was never played for again and it disappeared from view before being returned to local club Clones Town FC in 2014.

Enniskillen Castle museum manager Sarah McHugh said: “We’re just delighted that through this project we’ve been able to bring it to Fermanagh and Enniskillen as part of this community programme.

“The story behind it was very apt in terms of the subject and the period and it’s something we’re really happy to be able to borrow for this event.”

Visitors will be able to come and see the Lipton Cup on display in the visitor centre of Enniskillen Castle until Friday 30 September.
