Historic department store Whiteleys opens studios spaces for artists

London artists are enjoying the chance to take up a rare residency in the capital’s first department store.

Whiteleys, in Bayswater, offered work and exhibition space to four artists on the third floor of the building, which was built in 1863, ahead of continued redevelopment in 2019.

For up to three months, each resident is being helped with curation and encouraged to take part in in-house “criticism sessions” with other emerging artists.

Alexander James, 25, above, an illustration graduate from Camberwell School of Arts, will see his moving image exhibition A Kid Who Walked The Plank run from Friday to Sunday this week. The residency is set up through Working Project, which will offer similar opportunities in west London location next year.

Working Project director Cara Mills said: “The aim of our residency is to encourage emerging artists to expand and experiment within their practice. We are proud to offer space to artists in one of west London’s most iconic buildings.”
