Historic church in Cavan hits the market for just €99,500 - but there is plenty of work to be done inside

A historic church in Cavan has hit the market and could be the perfect project for anyone looking for a “blank canvas” project to work on.

The building dates back to 1862 and is a freestanding Gothic Revival Church of Ireland church.

Located in Kildorragh Glebe, Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan, this church is on sale for €99,500 and has the potential to be transformed into a home or a commercial premises.

Officially named Holy Trinity Church of Ireland Church, the building is described as an “exclusive opportunity to acquire a unique property”, by the agent’s listing on Daft.ie. It was designed by Welland & Gillespie, architects to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners.

The exterior maintains its historic look, but inside, there is plenty of work to be done.

There are a number of church pews, as well as features of the altar and the church windows.

“The interior of the property is a blank canvas waiting for the next custodian with vision and inspiration to bring out the very best that this historic site deserves,” the listing said.

According to the Buildings Of Ireland website, the disused church has “three-bay nave, gabled chancel with vestry as smaller gable set into south side, two-stage entrance tower with spire attached to south-west.

“Steeply pitched slate roof to nave and porch with clay ridge tiles, lead-roll hips to slated spire, raised barge copings with limestone finials and moulded kneelers,” it said.

There is a pointed arch door that opens to the tower, as well as Tudor arch timber-sheeted door to the vestry.

Just over an acre of land surrounds the building, with “excellently kept grounds”, the listing said. There are flowers, trees and other greenery on the site, and, from the pictures, there appears to be some graves on the site.

There is also a stone wall bordering the church on the roadside and is “a fitting signifier to the prestige and importance of this site”.

Buildings of Ireland describes this property as “a small but exquisitely detailed rural church” and compares it to St John’s Church in Cloverhill.

“Remarkably it retains nearly all its original materials, including an elaborate east window and unusually integrated vestry,” the website said.
