Hillhead Road accident: Tributes to 'quiet' grandad Jimmy Mullan who died in crash

Tributes have been paid to a grandfather who died following a two-vehicle crash in Co Derry on Monday.

James (Jimmy) Mullan lost his life following the crash on the Hillhead Road in Castledawson on Monday afternoon.

Sinn Fein councillor Ian Milne, who represents the local area, described the 65-year-old as a "quiet man" who was "well known" in and around Castledawson.

"I knew Jimmy and I know his family circle, his brothers," Mr Milne told MyDerry.

"Jimmy was a very quiet man who lived on his own. He lost his wife a number of years ago. The whole community in Castledawson are mourning a man that they know. He was well known in the area. Our hearts go out to all the family circle at this time."

The Mid Ulster councillor added: "I would offer my sincere condolences to Jimmy's family and the wider family circle."

Mr Mullan is described in a family notice, published by Garvins Funeral Service, as "dearly loved husband of the late Rhonda, much loved and devoted father of Steven, Darrell, Jocelyn and the late Nicholas, loving granda of Caitlin, Dylan, Carla, Lee and Bella and dearest brother of Jackie, Valerie, Kevin, Eugene, Mary, Annie and the late Canice and Frankie.

On Monday, a police spokesperson said: "Police Service Northern Ireland can confirm that a man has died following a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the Hillhead Road, Castledawson, today, Monday February 27.

"The collision, involving a car and lorry, occurred at around 12.40pm on Monday afternoon. Emergency Services attended and sadly the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

"He has been named as Jimmy Mullan aged in his 60s."

The PSNI spokesperson added: "Police are appealling to anyone who was travelling on the Moyola Road or Hillhead Road at the time and witnessed the collision or anyone who may have dashcam footage to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, and quote reference number 843 of 27/02/23."
