Hilary Duff now - two marriages, sick 'child abuse' trolling and nightmare neighbour

Back in the 2000s, Hilary Duff was one of the biggest names on the Disney channel due to her titular role on Lizzie McGuire.

The series was wildly popular and even spawned a Lizzie McGuire Movie, while Hilary went on to have a successful pop career as well as other acting roles including the lead in A Cinderella Story opposite teen heartthrob Chad Michael Murray.

Fans of Lizzie McGuire were delighted when a revival was announced in 2019 - but after several delays, it was eventually revealed last year that the reboot had been scrapped.

The show’s original stars were initially involved, but a series of disagreements over how to approach the character’s adult life saw creator Terri Minsky dramatically leave after the first two episodes were filmed, citing "creative differences".

Reports claimed the reboot centred on Lizzie living in Brooklyn and discovering her fiancé having an affair, while The Hollywood Reporter revealed a leaked script included "the existence of sex with cheating as a central plot point".

Hilary, 34, reportedly pleaded with Disney to move the show to streaming service Hulu so the reboot wouldn’t "limit the realities of a 30-year-old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating," but it seems the channel gave up completely instead.

"I know the efforts and conversations have been everything trying to make a reboot work, but sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen," Hilary wrote in a sad statement on Instagram.

"I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves.

"We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her. I’m very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn’t align."

We might never get to see how Lizzie McGuire grew up and what she did next - but it might have mirrored Hilary's own life, which has her seen marry twice and welcome three children.

Hilary starred in several more films roles after Lizzie McGuire, including as Holly Hamilton in The Perfect Man, Lorraine Baker in Cheaper by the Dozen, and Tanzie Marchetta in Material Girls.

More recently, she played Kelsey Peters in TV Land's longest-running original series Younger, for which she received two People's Choice Awards nominations.

Hilary also wrote a young adult novel named Elixir in 2010, and it became a New York Times bestseller.

Her relationship with Good Charlotte's Joel Madden, which was confirmed by her mother in an interview with Seventeen magazine, attracted attention in 2004 because she was just 16 and he was 25.

After this, Hilary dated Malcolm in the Middle actor Frankie Muniz and singer Aaron Carter, before marrying hockey player Mike Comrie in 2010. They welcomed a baby boy named Luca Cruz in 2012.

But in 2014, the pair announced they had amicably split and would be co-parenting their son together.

Hilary moved on with personal trainer Jason Walsh from 2015-2016, before embarking on a relationship with singer-songwriter Matthew Koma in 2017.

They had worked together extensively for her 2015 album Breathe In. Breathe Out, and he'd helped her write the titular track.

In 2018, Hilary and Matthew welcomed their first child together - a baby girl named Banks Violet.

The following May, the couple got engaged before tying the knot in December in a low-key ceremony in their LA home with guests including the bride's older sister Haylie, Walking Dead actress Alanna Masterson, and Superbad's McLovin, Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

A source told Just Jared : "It was a love-fest – a small and intimate ceremony at her house with friends and family.

"The ceremony started at sunset and they got married inside the house. When the ceremony was over, guests cheered.

"The reception was in a white tent... Her sister Haylie was very involved in the wedding prep too. Hilary and Haylie are very close."

In March, Hilary gave birth to her third baby, Mae James Blair, and said she didn't plan on adding to her brood any further.

"I'm not one of those women who loves being pregnant by any means, but I appreciate what my body's doing for me and our family," she told PEOPLE.

"So any given day, it varies between me missing my body that I get to put really cute clothes on, or feeling at peace that this is probably the last time that I'm going to be pregnant and trying to enjoy how sweet this time can be."

The new addition wasn't an immediate hit for two-year-old Banks as Hilary posted a hilarious snap of the tot looking unimpressed.

"I’m a big sister ....... marinating on how I feel about that!" Hilary captioned the photo.

Earlier this year, Hilary unveiled a tattoo on her neck saying "Mother".

But the mum has been targeted by trolls countless times over the years, including criticism over her decision to have her daughter Banks' ears pierced when she was eight months old.

Some angry social media users called it "child abuse" as another wrote: "Just wondering how she gave you consent to pierce her ears?"

When she also decided to have youngest daughter Mae's ears pierced at seven months old, Hilary pre-empted another backlash, writing on Instagram: "Yes! I pierced her ears today.

"Can’t wait for the internet to call me a child abuser....again. Lesss go."

Other cruel followers branded Hilary "inappropriate" in 2016 for kissing Lucas, then four, on the lips.

Speaking to InStyle, she said: "Kiss your kids, and anyone who doesn’t like it can hit unfollow.

"Not interested in what you have to say."

She also defended kissing Luca on Instagram, writing: "For anyone commenting that a kiss on the lips with my four-year-old is 'inappropriate' go ahead and click a quick unfollow with your warped minds and judgment."

Reflecting on mum-shaming in an interview with Yahoo, Hilary said: "At first I want to be defensive, but when I zoom out, I’m like, 'It’s one person. That’s not how everybody feels.'

"That doesn't really matter. That person's, like, a keyboard gangster who just needs to be heard or seen."

Hilary also called out her "a**hole neighbour" in an angry rant on social media - and ended up being threatened with legal action.

In 2018, she claimed the man made her house smell of marijuana and cigarettes due to him smoking "all night long" and claimed he woke up her up all the time.

"We know your parents pay your rent. We know you've never worked a day in your life - must be nice," Hilary said in a furious video.

"Have some respect for your neighbours who work hard to live in that building. Don't be a d**k, dude—and put your trash down the shoot."

Hilary admitted Banks was not happy about being a big sister (Instagram)

Tagging him on Instagram, she wrote: "Found youuu. I know [you're] still sleeping. I really hope your [hangover] hurts."

Sharing a screenshot of his profile picture, she ordered him to "stop breaking all your furniture when you fight with your girlfriend or boyfriend".

"It scares me and my kid," she said. "Therapy is cheaper."

The neighbour then spoke to Page Six, denying he smoked marijuana and noting that it was a "smoking" building which is why he signed the lease.

He said he was getting hate mail and death threats over Hilary's claims, and that he and his family were hiring lawyers.

In a later interview, he claimed he'd called the police after Hilary's husband Matthew tried to punch him - something her rep denied.

Officers told E! News they were called to the scene but there were "no visible injuries" and a report of harassment was made.

Hilary's publicist said: "Hilary and her young son have been subjected to excessive secondhand smoke, late night noise, garbage in the hallways, and an overall hazardous living environment from this man for months now.

"She tried numerous times in polite ways to handle this situation including countless sessions with the landlords of the building. As every mother knows, protecting your kid has to come first and foremost and that is her primary goal.

"She reached a breaking point after a 15-hour work day and yet another sleepless night."

It was previously announced that Hilary was starring in the How I Met Your Mother spin-off alongside Suraj Sharma, Francia Raisa, Tom Ainsley, Tien Tran and Chris Lowell.

And last week, it was revealed How I Met Your Father would be released in January 2022.

The series, executive produced by the original creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, is set in the near future and sees Hilary's character Sophie tell her son the story of how she met his dad.

Sex and the City actress Kim Cattrall will play an older version of Sophie.

Hilary said in a statement: "I've been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie.

"As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother, I’m honoured and even a little nervous that Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby.

"I realise these are big shoes to fill and I'm excited to slip my 6 ½’s in there!"
