Google Street View has thrown up some humorous snaps of people playing the fool, getting into sticky situations or being a little rude since gracing the internet in 2007. When searching for a pub image for a story, our sister title Edinburgh Live came across this cheeky chappie who decided to ‘flip the bird’ at the Google camera on a city centre street.
The image was captured on Northumberland Street and shows a man with sunglasses and a black t-shirt sticking his middle finger up to the vehicle. Was he making a statement against Big Tech? Lashing out at the rising surveillance culture of the 21st century? Or was he just taking his opportunity to leave his mark on the internet in the hope that someone would come across the snap?
The latter is of course most likely but we will simply never know. But the discovery got us thinking about some of the funnier images that have been captured by the Google Street View car.
First up is a vehicle that appears to have got into a spot of bother in the Highlands by falling into a crevice off the road. It is bad enough having your driving ability questioned by friends but imagine how bad it would be with the whole world watching.
Another funny image is of a man deciding to go skiing on a grassy hill as the Google Street View car passed by him. It is a lesson in never letting the lack of snow get in the way of improving your form ahead of ski season.
In Edinburgh, locals are well accustomed to penguins with the fantastic parade that takes place in the capital's zoo each day. But it is a rare sight to see a penguin, whether real or not, being towed behind a penny farthing on the road. A truly bonkers sight.
Last but by no means least, we have the puzzling pigeons who must have known that Google was on their way to film the street. It is relatively fitting that we are recycling this picture at Halloween as it is a rather unsettling sight to witness.
