Two experienced hikers found themselves in a perilous situation on Mount Washington in New Hampshire after getting lost in extreme weather conditions. The women, both seasoned hikers, were well-equipped with warm clothing, headlamps, and other gear but faced challenges when the wind intensified and temperatures dropped.
Struggling in waist-deep snow and whiteout conditions, one of the hikers encountered difficulties with a snowshoe getting stuck in a 'spruce trap,' further impeding their progress. Despite their efforts to navigate the terrain, they eventually had to call 911 for assistance.
Rescue efforts proved challenging as the trail was obscured by wind and snow, making it difficult for the hikers to find their way back. With temperatures plummeting and winds reaching 50 to 60 mph, the hikers were forced to huddle in the snow to stay warm while awaiting rescue.

After enduring six hours in the harsh conditions, a team of rescuers, including a snowcat vehicle, set out to locate the stranded hikers. The rescue operation was slow and arduous due to the deep snow, but the hikers were eventually found and treated for frostbite, primarily on their hands.
Both hikers, who had emergency gear and winter hiking experience, expressed gratitude for the rescue efforts and acknowledged the importance of being prepared for unexpected challenges. Despite the ordeal, they remained determined to continue hiking in the White Mountains, emphasizing the need to prioritize safety and be ready for any eventuality.
Reflecting on their experience, the hikers recognized the risks involved in outdoor activities but affirmed their commitment to returning to the trails, albeit with added precautions such as carrying a small pop-up tent for emergency shelter.
