Hikers fall from mountain ridge in Glencoe as rescue helicopter sent to scene

A rescue helicopter scrambled to save two hikers who were scaling a steep ridge in Glencoe this weekend.

The pair had been climbing Aonach Eagach in the sunshine before one fell a short distance and the other became stranded. With a leg injury, the distressed duo called Police Scotland, who sent Mountain Rescue teams to the incident.

A Coastguard helicopter rushed to the ridge and lifted both casualties into the chopper by a long winch. Their current conditions are unknown.

Dramatic pictures from the incident smoke from a flare billowing over the mountains during the mission as mountain rescue teams move in.

A statement from Glencoe Mountain Rescue Teams (GMRT) reads: "It was hot and sticky for our volunteers on the hill this weekend. GMRT were alerted by Police Scotland to a pair of walkers who had come into difficulty while descending from Aonach Eagach.

"One of the party had fallen a short distance resulting in injury and the other had become crag fast. Due to the location and potential for serious injury, a helicopter was requested.

"The casualty was able to provide a position from their smartphone unfortunately this proved to be inaccurate resulting in team members heading to a location over a kilometre away. It was only when Rescue 151 from Inverness arrived on scene and started to search that the error was spotted.

"The team on the hill, however, were treated to some amazing views across the Glen as the sun was setting on their way back down. With some amazing flying and teamwork from the crew of the Coastguard helicopter, they were able to pluck both casualties from their respective positions using an incredibly long winch.

"Thank you to the crew of 151 without whom it would have been a long technical rescue on some very tricky ground."
