Hikers climbing Snowdon complain about 'urine smell' and views of 'ugly rocks'

As one of the biggest mountains in the UK and just over 100 miles from Greater Manchester, Snowdon is an extremely popular hiking destination for Mancunians.

With an elevation of 1,085 metres (3,560 ft) above sea level and stunning views across Snowdonia National Park and the rest of North Wales, around half a million people make the trek to the peak every year. However, it is seemingly not for everyone, as North Wales Live reports.

Although it attracts an impressive five star rating on TripAdvisor, with 98pc of visitors ranking Snowdon as 'excellent' or 'very good', 21 people have left a 'terrible' rating. Some of the complaints are bizarre, with people complaining about its smell, lack of toilets and even how "exhausting" the ascent is.

New York-based Tripadvisor user Adhsz W complained: "There are no lavatories for all those who climb up and trek back. People seem to relieve themselves out in the open giving a whiff of urine smell everywhere in this hillside."

Richard A added: "Every rock you go behind smells of wee or has human excrement behind it, I walked behind a building at the top to find some poor woman taking a dump. Lots of visitors here so it’s building up into a veritable sewage fest."

One especially puzzling review read: "I did the Pyg track there and back and found the ascent horrific - so exhausting. Rubbish views of ugly rocks and a couple lakes sometimes, would never do it again."

Snowdon is one of three mountains climbed as part of the National Three Peaks Challenge - along with Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike. The summit can be reached by a number of paths and by the Snowdon Mountain Railway, a rack railway opened in 1896 which carries passengers the 3.75 miles from Llanberis to the Summit station.
