Hiker airlifted to hospital after suffering serious leg injury on Scots mountain

A hiker has been airlifted to hospital after seriously hurting her leg on a mountain in the Highlands, sparking a hefty rescue effort.

The alarm was raised at around 13.15pm on Friday, October 14 when Police Scotland were alerted to a walker having come into trouble on Buachaille Etive Beag, a peak situated between Glen Coe and Glen Etive.

Glen Mountain Rescue Team (GMRT) were called to assist officers and immediately sprang into action, speeding to Wee Buachaille, a ridge which connects the two Munros, where the victim was situated.

First responders battled relentlessly through harsh winds and heavy downpours in a bid to reach the casualty quickly.

Upon arrival, the woman was attended to by paramedics, before being flown to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness to receive further treatment. The extent of her injuries, as well as her current condition in hospital, is not yet known.

Photos taken at the scene, which were shared on social media, show crews armed with walkie talkies, illuminous back packs and other safety gear trekking through the rocky terrain.

A helicopter can also be seen waiting to whisk the stricken adventurer off to safety. A spokesperson for GMRT said: "Come rain or shine... It was a bit of both for volunteers during a recent rescue on the Wee Buachaille.

"As team members were heading up the hill there was torrential rain before the clouds cleared allowing a bit of nifty parking by Rescue 151.

"Working with the crew of 151 the casualty was assessed, and given initial treatment before being flown to hospital. Thanks to R151 for the assistance and saving both the casualty and us an awkward stretcher carry!

"We would all like to wish the casualty a full and swift recovery."

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: "We were made aware of a woman having fallen on Stob Dubh in Glencoe around 1.10pm on Friday, 14 October, 2022.

"Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team and the HM Coastguard helicopter attended and the woman was taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for treatment."
