Hiker, aged in his 60s, dies after 20-metre fall near Ireland's tallest waterfall in Sligo

A hiker, aged in his 60s, has died after falling 20 metres while walking near Ireland's highest waterfall in Co Sligo on Monday.

The man, who was visiting the area from Galway, fell down a gully into a river near the Devil’s Chimney area of Glencar yesterday evening.

He was walking with his partner at the time of the accident and is is believed to have sustained a severe head injury as a result of the fall.

Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue were alerted to the accident at around 7pm on Monday and a major rescue operation was launched with 10 volunteers responding to the call.

They were also joined by the National Ambulance Service and Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 118.

The man was found in a critical condition and hauled up 20 metres into a field where rescuers performed CPR on him for 30 minutes but they were unable to save him.

A garda spokesperson said in a statement: "Gardaí and emergency services engaged in an operation after a man in his 60s suffered a fall at the Devils Chimney, Glencar, Co Sligo yesterday evening 1st August 2022.

"The man (60s) was located but was later pronounced dead at the scene."

The Devil’s Chimney is a popular 1.5km mountain trail walk near the Sruth in Aghaidh An Aird waterfall, which is the tallest in Ireland at 150m.
