Tragedy struck on Tuesday morning in South Korea as a highway overpass collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least four construction workers and injuries to six others. Among the deceased were two Chinese nationals.
The incident occurred in Cheonan, located south of the capital Seoul. According to an official from the Ansan fire department, five of the injured individuals are in serious condition.
Dashcam footage aired by broadcaster YTN captured the harrowing moment when the towering deck of the overpass suddenly gave way and crashed onto the road below. Fortunately, no passenger cars were present at the construction site at the time of the collapse.
The ongoing construction of the expansive road network has been a focal point of development in the region. In response to the disaster, Acting Interior and Safety Minister Koh Ki-dong has issued urgent directives to various agencies, including the fire and police departments. The minister emphasized the need to mobilize all available resources and personnel for rescue operations while prioritizing the safety of the responding firefighters.
