The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, with 18 cars becoming trapped as 184.3 square meters of the highway disintegrated.
Disturbing social media videos captured the chaotic scene, showing a fierce fire beneath the collapsed road and emergency service workers responding to the crisis. Daylight revealed a grim aftermath, with cars piled up at the bottom of a ravine.
Fortunately, thirty individuals injured in the accident are receiving medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition. The Meizhou city government, along with a rescue force of approximately 500 personnel dispatched by the Guangdong provincial government, are actively involved in rescue operations.
Heavy rainfall has been a significant challenge in southern China in recent weeks, leading to widespread flooding in Guangdong province. Over 110,000 residents have been forced to relocate due to the floods, which have claimed the lives of at least four individuals, including a brave rescue worker.
