Highly-rated Bristol City women's defender Brooke Aspin recovering in hospital with an infection

Bristol City have wished highly-rated defender Brooke Aspin a full recovery after she was admitted to hospital with an infection.

The 17-year-old has spent the last few weeks being treated by the services of the NHS after missing the start of the Women's Championship season with the Robins having played two matches so far.

A club statement posted online read: "City Women defender Brooke Aspin is recovering from an infection for which she is being treated in hospital. Brooke, her family, friends and team-mates would like to thank everyone who has and continues to send their best wishes for her full recovery.

"Bristol City is supporting the Aspin family through this difficult time and we would like to thank the medical staff from the club and the NHS, in particular the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, for their dedication and commitment in caring for Brooke. We look forward to having Brooke back with us."

Aspin is widely regarded as a player who has a hugely bright future in the game. In June, it was reported how City had to fend off five clubs in the Women's Super League following her breakthrough campaign last season.

Captain of the England Under-17 side, the Daily Mail wrote how two of the clubs will play Champions League this season but City remain confident they can keep hold of their talent and secure her to a professional deal on her 18th birthday next July.

Aspin was hugely impressive in the heart of defence last season under Lauren Smith and showed maturity beyond her years in 20 appearances as City finished in third behind London City and champions Liverpool.

City have started their new season with two wins in their opening two matches, beating Coventry and Blackburn.
