High school students raise more than £200,000 for janitor, 80, so he can finally retire

Saddened students who felt their 80-year-old school janitor shouldn't still have to work begun fundraising so he could retire - and soon raked in more than £200,000.

The worker, referred to only as Mr James, can now hang up his screwdriver and mop at Callisburg High School, Texas.

Three pupils set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the new handyman and were stunned by the response.

Greyson Thurman, Marti Yusko and Banner Tidwell decided to try and raise enough money so he could finally call it a day.

But within weeks, $270,000 was pledged - almost £225,000.

Not only can he now retire, he can afford a home of his own thanks to their generosity.

The original goal of $10,000 (£8,300) to cover his rent, food, and bills was met within hours and the money kept rolling in.

Mr James was forced to take the job last month after a hefty hike in rent.

"It's just so sad seeing an 80-year-old man having to do things that no 80-year-old person should have to do,'" Banner told KXII.

They begun the campaign on February 15 and online they stated: "I'm having a fundraiser for our janitor who is struggling to pay his rent.

"He had to leave retirement to continue to pay his rent that was raised. Just a little will change his life!!'

The idea went viral after a clip of the janitor pushing his cleaning trolley around the school was viewed thousands of times.

The text read: "This is our 80 y/o janitor who had his rent raised and had to come back to work. Let's help Mr James out.

"My classmates and I hate seeing Mr James here, no one his age should have to be cleaning our messes up to continue to live."

In an update, a picture of the trio alongside the worker was posted with the caption: "Thanks so much to everyone that has donated and spread the word to help Mr. James.

Proud Principal Jason Hooper said: "Its just amazing.

"You know of the need that was met because of three kind kids, but of all of our students who have pitched in to help that need."
